DALDORCH HOUSE SCHOOL, CATRINE, AYRSHIRE.
Daldorch House School is run by The National Autistic Society and provides care and education for children suffering from autism. The residential accommodation requires to be robust enough to cope with an intensive use (it is operational throughout the year) together with the children’s behaviour, yet attractive enough to be their homes. We liaised directly and intensively with the school to ensure the layout and interior design resulted in a calming and safe environment for both the children and staff.
The accommodation consists of three small units of nine ensuited bedrooms; all served by care staff units; kitchens; dining and sitting rooms and specialist hydro-bathrooms. This project comprises the refurbishment of a grade-B listed Stable block into a teaching and administration building.
The bulk of the works carried out on the Stable block was fabric repair. All windows and doors were replaced with timber ones; all roofs were replaced and re-slated; all rainwater goods were replaced with cast iron items and the red sandstone was cleaned and repaired. The works to the stone consisted of indents and lime-based plastic repairs. All cement pointing and render was removed and joints repointed using a lime-based mortar.
