SPRINGFIELD ROAD, GLASGOW

The Miller Partnership recently obtained planning permission to build 75 new flats in the east end of Glasgow. The site is located in the shadow of the proposed 2014 Commonwealth Games Athletes Village.

The project comprises a mixture of 1-bed & 2-bed flats arranged to create a central courtyard and varies between 4 and 6 storeys in height. The differences in height allow eaves and ridge lines to line through with those of adjacent tenement properties – this was a particular requirement of the planning authority.

The scheme includes an underground car park, providing 100% parking within the site boundary as street parking was ruled out by the local authority. The building’s form is based on and alludes to the local tenements:-

- Central stair with 2 flats accessed per floor
- Projecting ‘bay’ windows
- Groupings of 2 windows
- Brick façade with string courses

The courtyard elevations, however, project a more modern aesthetic and the shallow pitched roof allows accommodation to be located within the roofspace. The project is programmed to start on site in the summer of 2009 and cost approx £7m.
